Botany The study of plants

A botanist is a person who studies plants.

The process of  seed beginning to grow is called germination. Watch this video about germination.

The outer covering of a seed is the seed coat.

The embryo is the inside of a seed that is the beginning of a new plant.

The cotyledons are the halves of the seed that provide food for the new bean plant until the plant has green leaves and can make its own food.

The radicle is the beginning of the root system of the plant.

Vascular plants are plants with roots, stems, and leaves.

Angiosperms are flowering plants. Gymnosperms are plants with seeds in cones. In angiosperms the seeds are in the fruits, but in gymnosperms the seeds are in the cones.

Parts of a Plant

The roots absorb water and minerals from the soil and also act as an anchor. When it is windy the roots make sure the plant stays firm in the soil.

The stem holds the plant upright and carries water, food, and minerals to the other parts of the plant.

The leaves have a green pigment called chlorophyll which absorbs the sunlight and makes food for the plant.

In angiosperms, the bud protects the flower as it develops. The flower is usually colorful to attract bees and insects.

The fruit of a plant contains the seeds and excess food.

Remember, in angiosperms the seeds are in the fruits, but in gymnosperms the seeds are in the cones.

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make their own food.

Sunlight shines on the plant. The chlorophyll are molecules in the chloroplasts in the leaves. The chlorophyll absorb sunlight. The stomata are tiny holes on the under side of leaves that take in carbon dioxide. The plant uses the sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide produce food in the form of sugar, which is called glucose, in the chloroplasts in the leaves. During photosynthesis oxygen is released or given off by the plant. Only green plants can photosynthesize.
