5th Grade

Content and Announcements for Jan. 9-13

St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School - Sunday, January 08, 2012

Here is information regarding the content for this week.  Please check planners nightly for specific homework.

Religion:

This week, students will need to memorize Romans 8:14 by Thursday.  "For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God."

We are studying the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.  There will be a short review homework over next weekend and it will be due on Tuesday, January 17th.

As this Christmas season ends, we will construct liturgical year calendars. Students will also be planning and creating a poster for Catholic Schools Week.

Math:

Students will estimate sums and differences by rounding decimals and will continue division of decimals and whole numbers this week.  Accelerated Math practices and tests will be given.

Social Studies:

Our study of the New England colonies will continue throughout the week.  The Chapter 5 test will be given before the end of the quarter.  Students will be reviewing sections that were read in class and will be answering questions related to the content as homework each night.

Science:

We will have a guest presentation on dental hygiene.  Students will also complete comprehension questions for the TFK on inventions of 2011.

Reading:

As we continue to look back on the year 2011, we will finish reading headline stories and answer comprehension questions.

Language Arts/Spelling:

Students will be typing another personal narrative into My Access.  We will also look at how authors create "showing" instead of "telling" sentences and paragraphs.

For spelling this week, students will have a pretest on words that have "KING" in them. They will need to study these words nightly and a test will be given on Thursday.  Since we will be celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 16th, we thought this would be a unique spelling activity to incorporate into our curriculum.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

There will be Mass at church on Wednesday, January 11th.  Please make sure your child is at the church by 8:15 AM.

The Diocesan Conference will begin on Friday, January 13th.  There will be no school on this day.

On Monday, January 16th, there will be no school in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The second quarter will be ending on Thursday, January 19th.  This is a reminder to encourage and check with your child to see if he/she has reached the AR goal set for this quarter.  A grade will be given for AR points.

Have a great week!
