Content and Announcements for Feb. 27-March 2

Religion:

Memorize by Friday:  Psalm 66:8,9   Bless our God, you peoples; loudly sound his praise, who has kept us alive and not allowed our feet to slip.

We will review Chapter 9 online for homework.  A class review activity will take the place of a test this week.  Watch for the Ch. 10 Family Page in the home folder on Thursday.

 

Math:  

We are listing factors and multiples (memorized facts make this easier!).  On Leap Day we will learn the reasons for the extra day with a calendar activitiy and a "How Far Can You Leap?" challenge.


Social Studies: 

Students will begin reading the first section in Chapter 7 on the Middle Colonies.  

Geography - Students begine to relate regions of the U.S. to the early colonies they are studying in history.

Science:

We will complete our study of space exploration/John Glenn with a timeline organizer and TFK comprehension questions.


Reading: 

We are beginning the third section of our book, My Side of the Mountain.  Students will need to continue reading their own survival books each night.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

Students will study words from List 21 in our spelling books.  

In language, we will discuss conjunctions as well as run-on sentences. 

Last week, students began a story about a family moving to America.  Students will continue their writing during My Access.  

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Science Fair projects and inventions set up is from 7:30 to 8:30 am on Tuesday.  Family and class viewing is all day on Wednesday.

Progress reports will be sent home on Thursday, March 1st.  

We will have a Diocesan Spelling Bee on Thursday, March 1st from 9:15-10:15 AM.  Students in grades 3-8 will be participating.  Lucas Kassity will be representing 5th grade.  Good luck Lucas!

Students will be released at 12:30 PM on Friday, March 2nd.

Content and Announcements for Feb. 21-24

Here is information regarding the content for this week.  Please check planners nightly for specific homework.

Religion:

Our plans for praying, fasting, and almsgiving during Lent will be made as we recognize Shrove Tuesday and then Ash Wednesday.  We will deepen our understanding of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition in Ch. 9.

Choose one verse to memorize for a quiz on Friday: 

Mark 1:15  Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel.  or  Genesis 3:19  Remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return.


Math:  

Everyone has developed a good grasp of divisibility so we are ready to practice factoring and identifying the GCF.


Social Studies: 

We will begin Chapter 7 in our textbooks on the Middle Colonies.  

Science:

Monday marks the 50th anniversary of John Glenn's five hour flight around the earth!  We will learn about him and other space explorers in our TFK magazine and Science textbook.

Be prepared to give a short 3 min. presentation describing your Science Fair project or invention on Thursday.  We will compose some of it in class.

Science Fair projects or inventions are to be set up in the multi-purpose room next Tuesday from 7:30-8:30 a.m.  The judging will occur that morning.  The Fair is open for family and class viewing all day on Wednesday, Feb. 29.


Reading: 

Our analysis and reading of My Side of the Mountain will continue this week.  Students will take their second quiz on the book on Thursday, February 23rd.  This week, students will also begin their own survival book to be read at home.  The project explanation was sent home last week.  Students will be responsible for keeping a nightly log for the book.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

Students will study List 20 from their spelling books.  In language, we will wrap up our study of prepositional phrases this week.

We will begin our discussion of how to write research papers.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Ash Wednesday Mass is at the church.  Please try to have your child come early to the church as we will be participating in a community Mass.  Students will start to be seated at 8:10.  

There will be spring pictures on Friday, February 24th.  Students may come to school in free dress that day.  

Save the date:  Annual Fifth Grade Snowshoe Trek at Tahoe on Monday, March 12!

Religion: 

We will review Unit 2 during class.  Our next objective will be to recognize God as He reveals himself in Sacred Scripture.  Chapter 9 also provides us the opportunity to compare Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Watch for the new family activity page in the Thursday home folder.

Memorize by Friday:  1 Corinthians 13:4  

Love is patient. Love is kind.  It does not envy.  It does not boast.  It is not proud.


Math:  

Students will determine which operation to use with whole numbers and decimals in Valentine word problems.  Factors and divisibility rules will be taught with class and homework practice.  Accelerated Math tests and practices continue for new and review fifth grade objectives.


Social Studies: 

We are wrapping up our study of the Southern Colonies this week.  Students will be creating a flier for a specific colony in the south as well as taking their Chapter 6 test on Thursday.  

Geography:

A Nat'l Geographic map activity will help us recognize products of the colonies.

Science:

The class will complete their organizers as we gather information about the Carbon-Oxygen Cycle.  Science current events will be read, discussed, and written about with a new TFK magazine.


Reading: 

Students will continue reading from the class text, My Side of the Mountain.  Information regarding a book project will be sent home this week, and it will relate to the theme of survival.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

Our study of prepositional phrases will continue throughout the week with various activities.  Students will identify phrases in a text, create a poem using prepositional phrases, and write clues with them as well.  

In spelling, students will learn words from List 19 in their spelling books.  A spelling test will be on Friday.  

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Our class will have a Valentine's Day party on Tuesday afternoon from 2:15-3:05.  In the spirit of friendship, please bring Valentine cards for everyone in the class.  Our class list was on the back of our newsletter last week.

Religion:

Memorize the last six lines of the Apostle's Creed (p.128) by Friday.  We are studying our Catholic beliefs found in the Apostle's Creed through activities within Chapter 8.  Online review will be assigned on Wed.-due by Friday.  Chapter 8 test is on Friday morning.


Math:  

Division w/double digit divisors and division of decimals by whole numbers continues this week.


Social Studies: 

We will finish reading about the Southern Colonies from Chapter 6 in our textbook.  

Geography will include a product map of the colonies.  Following Super Bowl Sunday, we will read and find information about US cities which host NFL football teams with a cultural map activity.

Science:

Three cycles in nature will be compared and reviewed.


Reading: 

Our class will continue reading from the book My Side of the Mountain.  Students will have their first quiz on this book on Tuesday.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

Our study of prepositions will continue this week.  Students will be typing their last personal narrative into My Access as well.

In spelling, students will be reviewing words from Lists 13-17.  Various cumulative review tests will be given throughout the week.  


ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Mass will be at school on Wednesday, February 8th.  Students should be dressed in Mass uniforms. 

The Crab Feed will be on Friday, February 10th from 6-11 PM!

We will be having a Valentine's Day party from 2:00-3:05 PM on Tuesday, February 14th.  A list with student names will be sent home this week.

Religion:

Students will complete the Chapter 7 review at blestarewe.com by Wed. and the test will be that afternoon.  We will begin our study of the Apostle's Creed in Ch. 8.  The Family Page of activitities will be in the home folder this week.  Memorize by Friday:  Matthew 28: 18-19:  All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Go and make disciples of all nations.

Math:  

The class is really making progress in dividing with double digit divisors!  We will continue to practice this in school and for homework.

Social Studies: 

We will continue our study of the Southern Colonies by reading Chapter 6 in our textbook.  Students will also make a timeline to show when each of the 13 colonies were established.  As we complete sections in our textbook, students will be assigned homework to reflect on the information learned.  

Science:

Our current focus is on cycles in nature:  water/nitrogen/carbon-oxygen. 

Science & Inventions Fair is in 4 weeks.  Your child has due dates to help him/her organize time.  The first document due is this Tuesday, Jan. 31.  If the project involves humans or animals with backbones, a Scientific Review Committee (LSRC) Approval Form must be submitted on Tuesday. 

Reading: 

Our class is still reading the book My Side of the Mountain.  As students read, they are filling in graphic organizers related to survival skills as well as analyzing the text through various literature activities.  There first quiz on this book will be next week.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

Our study of prepositions will continue this week.  Students will begin their last personal narrative as well.

In spelling, students will study words from List 17 in the spelling book.  On Tuesday, January 31st from 9:15-10:15 AM, we will have a school Spelling Bee.  The students from our class who will be participating are Lucas Kassity, Adan Garcia, and Ava Loos.  Congratulations! 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

It is Catholic Schools Week!  Some activities to remember include:

1.  Mass at 9:30 AM on Sunday, January 29th.  Students who attend in MASS UNIFORM will receive a free dress pass.  

2. Open House from 4-7 PM on Wednesday, February 1st

3.  Hot dog lunch for students and parents on Thursday, February 2nd.  Lunch for 3rd-5th grade will be from 11:55-12:15 PM.


Students will be dismissed at 12:30 PM on Friday, February 3rd.

Religion:

We will learn about God's grace and the gifts of the Holy Spirit including how they relate to Baptism and Confirmation.  The Chapter 7 Family Page was sent home last Thursday.

Memorize Ezekial 36:27 by Friday:  God's Spirit, which is grace, encourages us to follow his teachings and laws.

Math: 

Estimating quotients continues as we begin to divide whole numbers by 2 digit divisors. 

Social Studies: 

In social studies, students will begin to learn about the colonies in the south.  We will start Chapter 6 this week in our textbook.  

Science:  

Since we finally have precipitation (hurrah!), the water cycle's importance and processes will be studied.  The hexagonal shapes of snowflakes and the recent study of them by physicist K. Libbrecht will be included.  Homework will include tracking the water a student uses in a day/week.

Reading: 

Our class has begun a unit on the theme of survival.  This week, students will engage in conversations about survival as it is seen in the book My Side of the Mountain.  Students will be analyzing the plot as it relates to our theme.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

This week, students will study words from List 16 in their spelling notebooks.  

In language, prepositions will be taught and students will begin to understand prepositional phrases.  

Another personal narrative will be written during the week and typed into My Access.  

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

We will have Mass at school on Wednesday, January 25th.  This is also the last day that we will be collecting the snack bags that will be given to the Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada.  The flier with specific details has already been sent home.  

Next week is Catholic Schools Week.  If you would like to join us for an "Appreciation Lunch" on Thursday, February 2nd, please return the pink form that was in the home folders.  We will need an accurate count for lunch.  Thank you!

Religion:

Chapter 6 test on Wednesday after completing the online review over the weekend.  Memorize Mark 12:30-31 by Friday.  Please begin sending snack bags for our service project during Catholic Schools Week.

Math:  

We are completing Accelerated Math tests since the end of the quarter is on Thursday. 

Social Studies: 

Students will be reviewing content from Chapter 5 and our study of the New England colonies.  The unit test will be given on Thursday, January 19th.  

Science:

Science & Invention Fair due dates and more information will be discussed.  The first letter describing the upcoming fair due dates, website for ideas, etc.  was sent in the home folders last week!

Reading: 

We will begin a unit of study related to the theme of survival.  Our class will begin reading My Side of the Mountain and we will start an analysis of the book as it relates to the theme.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

Students will begin writing their last personal narrative for this year.  The prompt will be given on Tuesday and students will begin typing their final drafts of their narratives into My Access on Friday.  

In spelling, students will need to study the words from Lesson 15.  The spelling test will be on Friday, January 20th.  

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The end of the second quarter will be on Thursday, January 19th.  Report cards will be sent home the following Thursday on January 26th.

Here is information regarding the content for this week.  Please check planners nightly for specific homework.

Religion: 

This week, students will need to memorize Romans 8:14 by Thursday.  "For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God."

We are studying the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.  There will be a short review homework over next weekend and it will be due on Tuesday, January 17th.  

As this Christmas season ends, we will construct liturgical year calendars. Students will also be planning and creating a poster for Catholic Schools Week.  

Math:  

Students will estimate sums and differences by rounding decimals and will continue division of decimals and whole numbers this week.  Accelerated Math practices and tests will be given.  

Social Studies: 

Our study of the New England colonies will continue throughout the week.  The Chapter 5 test will be given before the end of the quarter.  Students will be reviewing sections that were read in class and will be answering questions related to the content as homework each night.  

Science:

We will have a guest presentation on dental hygiene.  Students will also complete comprehension questions for the TFK on inventions of 2011.  

Reading: 

As we continue to look back on the year 2011, we will finish reading headline stories and answer comprehension questions.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

Students will be typing another personal narrative into My Access.  We will also look at how authors create "showing" instead of "telling" sentences and paragraphs.  

For spelling this week, students will have a pretest on words that have "KING" in them. They will need to study these words nightly and a test will be given on Thursday.  Since we will be celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 16th, we thought this would be a unique spelling activity to incorporate into our curriculum. 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

There will be Mass at church on Wednesday, January 11th.  Please make sure your child is at the church by 8:15 AM.  

The Diocesan Conference will begin on Friday, January 13th.  There will be no school on this day.  

On Monday, January 16th, there will be no school in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. 

The second quarter will be ending on Thursday, January 19th.  This is a reminder to encourage and check with your child to see if he/she has reached the AR goal set for this quarter.  A grade will be given for AR points.

Religion:

Students will need to memorize the following for a quiz on Friday: 

Galatians 4:4-5  "In the fullness of time, God sent his Son, born of Mary, to save us."

The Chapter 5 review will need to be completed on Tuesday or Wednesday night with a test on Thursday.  

We will continue our Advent preparation activities this week and recognize Our Lady of Guadalupe's feast day on Monday.

  

Math:

Students will apply all of the operations with whole numbers and decimals during a Christmas shopping "trip" this week.      

Social Studies:

Our Chapter 4 test on early European settlements will be on Wednesday.  Students will be taking home their books to study on Monday and Tuesday night.  

In geography, students will participate in a Mexico map activity.  We will also watch the Geography Bee that will take place on Tuesday morning beginning at 9:00 AM.    

Science: 

We will complete our reading of the TFK magazine and discuss changes in the Arctic as well as other science news.

Reading:

Students will continue to read and analyze various autobiographies  as part of our study on narrative writing.  We will focus on reading and comprehension with each story and then reread to further develop our knowledge of how to write with details and organization.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

Students will complete a hand-written final draft of our latest personal narrative.  

In language, students will participate in various activities focused on homophones.  

There will be no spelling list this week.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Congratulations to our Fifth Grade Geography Bee winners!  Isabella Daulerio and Aidan Thomas, with Lena Richardson as an alternate, will compete in the School Final Competition this Tuesday, Dec. 13th at 9 AM.  

On Tuesday, we are asking that your child pack an extra sack lunch to benefit less fortunate children living in Carson City.  Please do not pack anything that will need to be microwaved.  Thank you!

Mass will be at the school on Wednesday, Dec. 14th.  Hot lunch will also be provided on this day for students who prepaid at the beginning of the year. 

Mrs. Perdomo will be showing a special movie to the whole school on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.  Students will be watching Boys Town.  

Our class Christmas party will be this Friday, beginning at 10:50 AM.  There is a form outside of our classroom for you to sign up to bring something or you can e-mail Joelle Sayre.  Thank you for making this day special for the kids!

Content Announcements for Dec. 5-9

Religion:

Students will need to memorize the new Mass response for the Invitation to Communion: 

"Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed."

There will be a Family Tree homework on Monday to coincide with our creation of Jesus' family tree, called the Jesse Tree.

An Advent test will be on Wednesday and students should study pages 318-325 in their book.  There will be no online review.  Students will continue to make daily reflections on our Advent preparations as we draw closer to Christmas.

We will celebrate St. Nicholas Day and the feast of the Immaculate Conception this week.  

Math:

Students will continue to compare and order decimals.  Multiplying decimals will begin this week.     

Social Studies:

In social studies, students will continue reading and studying Chapter 4 on early European settlements in North America.    

Science: 

We will study the Arctic and Antarctic ecosystems including animal behaviors, especially the caribou.  This will include the effects of climate change.  

Reading:

Students will continue to read and analyze various autobiographies  as part of our study on narrative writing.  We will focus on reading and comprehension with each story and then reread to further develop our knowledge of how to write with details and organization.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

Students will finish typing their narratives that were started last week as well as begin a new personal narrative. 

Students need to practice their spelling words from Lesson 14 from the list that is in the homework folder. The spelling test will be given on Friday. 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Congratulations to our Fifth Grade Geography Bee winners!  Isabella Daulerio and Aidan Thomas, with Lena Richardson as an alternate, will compete in the School Final Competition on Tuesday, Dec. 13th at 9 AM.  

We would like to thank all of the parents who provided our staff with such a wonderful lunch on Friday for our staff development day.  It was GREATLY appreciated!  

Mass will be at the church on Thursday, Dec. 8th.  Please make sure your child is at the church by 8:20 AM.
