Content and Announcements for May 21-25

Religion: 

(No memorization this week since we are memorizing the Preamble.)

We are studying the Commandments within Chapter 15.

Family Life - Check the planners for the assignment on next week's Tuesday discussion!


Math:  

Students will find the circumference, radius, and diameter of a circle by using a formula.  We will continue to practice and test fifth grade objectives in Accelerated Math.

  

Social Studies: 

We will continue to read about the creation of our government.  Students will about the three branches that make up our federal government and how each branch functions.  We will finish reading Chapter 9 and start preparing for our last test which will be on Wednesday, May 30th.  

Memorize the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution for an oral quiz by Friday, May 25.


Science:

Students will share their solar eclipse observations and write about their own experience.  We will complete a lesson on the characteristics of the sun from our text.


Reading: 

Students will read a few more stories that relate to the Revolutionary War.  Practicing a written response to critical thinking questions will be emphasized this week.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

Throughout the year, we have received many letters from other Catholic schools who are participating in the Great Mail Race.  Students will fill out the questionnaires that have been sent to us and include a letter that describes our school, city, and state.  

Students will be asked to study List 27 this week in spelling.  

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Mass will be held at the church on Wednesday, May 23rd.  Please have your child to the church by 8:10 in Mass uniform. 

The annual Talent Show will be held on Thursday from 1:00-3:00 PM.  A mandatory practice for those participating will be on Wednesday from 3:15-4:45 PM. 

The last PTO meeting of the year will be on Wednesday night beginning at 6:30 PM.  We hope to see you there!

We would like to thank all the parents who volunteered either their time or baked goods to our 5th grade booth at the Spirit Festival.  This was a fun day for all, and we really appreciate your involvement!

Content and Announcements for May 14-18

Religion:

Memorize John 15: 9,12 from Sunday's Gospel:  Jesus said to his disciples, "As the Father loves me, so I love you.  This is my commandment: love one another as I love you."

We will complete Ch. 14 and begin a study of the Ten Commandments in Chapter 15.


Math:  

Students will continue to + - x fractions & mixed numbers.  We will relate fractions and decimals then decimals and percents.

  

Social Studies: 

Students will receive their parts for our Reader's Theater on the U. S. Constitution.  Some memorization will be expected, although most of the theater activity is read with expression.  More information will arrive in the Thursday home folder!

Our study of Chapter 9 will continue this week as students read about foreign relations during the late 1700's and early 1800's.   


Geography: 

All of the class has successfully memorized the fifty states and capitals of our country!  We will locate U.S. waterways this week.


Science:

Students will study the sun and be prepared to view the total solar eclipse next Sunday, May 20.  Watch for more information coming home during the week.


Reading: 

Students will continue to be engaged in reading short stories that take place during the time of the Revolutionary War.  Our focus strategies will continue to be on questioning and following directions. 


Language Arts/Spelling:

In spelling, students will need to study words from List 27.  

Adjectives will continue to be reviewed throughout the week.  In addition to reviewing this topic, students will be expected to identify adjectives and use them within a short writing prompt in My Access.  


ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Walk-Jog-A-Thon is on Friday, May 18th!  Please turn in any remaining pledges by Wednesday, May 16th.  Our class is sponsoring the Cake/Cupcake Walk booth for the Spirit Festival on this day.  We appreciate all of the parents who have either donated baked goods or money for this booth.  If you haven't donated items/money, you can still send $8.00 to school with your child to help defray the cost of purchasing cupcakes for students to win.  Thanks again for your support.  This will be a fun day for everyone!

Religion: 

Memorize Psalm 37:3 - Trust in the Lord and do good that you may live in the land and live secure.

We will begin Ch. 14:  Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick

Family Life:  Assignments for Lessons 3 & 4 are due with a parent signature on Thursday. 

Please teach Lessons 5 & 6 with the parent phamplets as resources for your home discussion.  Complete the written responses on p. 38 and 42.  The assignments and parent signature are due by Thursday, May 17.


Math:  

Students are applying their understanding of Least Common Denominators to comparing and ordering fractions and mixed numbers.

  

Social Studies: 

This week, students will start our last chapter for the year.  We will be learning about the beginning of our nation and the writing of the Constitution.  

Geography: 

Pacific Region test on Wednesday - Now we will know all 50 states and capitals!


Science:

We are completing our studyi of the job of a paleontologist and fossils.


Reading: 

Students will focus on how to ask and answer questions while reading.  We will read a story from the perspective of an African American during the Revolutionary War. 

Language Arts/Spelling:

Students will finish typing a story into My Access about the Boston Tea Party.  

Words from List 26 will need to be studied for the week. 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Talent show tryouts are on Monday and Tuesday this week.

There will be Mass at school on Wednesday, May 9th.  Please come dressed in Mass uniform.

It's Reading Week!  There will be a Family Literacy Night on Wednesday, May 9th from 5-7 PM.  Please RSVP to this event by Monday afternoon.

Religion:

Memorize James 5:13 for a quiz on Friday:  Is anyone among you suffering?  He should pray.  Is anyone in good spirits?  He should sing praise.         We are beginning Unit 4 which is a study of the sacraments of Reconciliation and Annointing of the Sick.

Family Life:

Bring your new text to class on Tuesday with Lessons 1 & 2 already read with your parent.   Read Lessons 3 & 4 by next Tuesday, May 8.  Please sign your child's finished class assignment by Thursday to indicate that you have reviewed the content.

Math:  

Students will continue to perform add, subtract, and multiplication with unlike fractions and mixed numbers.

  

Social Studies: 

We are finishing our chapter on the Revolutionary War.  Students will create a timeline this week and look at the role of women during the war.  The test will be on Thursday, May 3rd.  

Geography: 

Rocky Mountain Region test on Wednesday, May 2


Science:

We are evaluating and making inferences about our archaeological dig of middens.  In Science news, we'll learn about fossil discoveries.


Reading: 

Students will continue to be engaged in reading stories related to the Revolutionary War.  This week, students will build upon their knowledge of Loyalists and practice the skill of cause and effect in reading. 

Language Arts/Spelling:

Students will type a historical fiction narrative based on the Boston Tea Party.  We will also begin our last research project on the causes of the Revolutionary War.  

In spelling, students will learn words from List 25 in their spelling books.  

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

We would like to congratulate those students who participated in the Missoula Children's Theater play over the weekend.  Ellen, Shelby, Dylan, and Ava did a fabulous job within the play and we are proud of you!

Religion:

Fifth graders will help with the Mass at school on Wednesday morning!   We are completing our study of types of prayer in Chapter 12.


Math:  

Students are applying their knowledge of operations with like fractions to adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

  

Social Studies: 

We are in the process of learning about the Revolutionary War.  Last Friday, students participated in a simulation about the Stamp Act and it was a fun way to teach them about taxation. 

As part of this unit, students will be identifying causes and effects of the war.  Starting next week, students will begin writing a research report about the causes and effects.  This will be the last big paper of the year. 

Geography: 

The North Central Region was introduced last week.  Students will take a test on those states and capitals on Tuesday.


Science:

Current events in Science will be covered as we learn of the history and purpose of Earth Day.  Students will work as archeologists to recover artifacts and infer their use during our "dig".


Reading: 

Our reading series has some wonderful selections about the Revolutionary War and the various perspectives that existed during this time period.  Students will be reading these selections and be doing various activities related to them.  

Our focus strategy last week involved evaluating an author's point of view.  This week, we will finish this focus and start on cause and effect.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

Students will write a narrative story related to the Boston Tea Party this week.  They will be placing themselves at this historic event and be writing about it.

In spelling, we will review words from Lists 19-23.  Students will be tested on their knowledge throughout the week.  

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

The third quarter awards assembly will be on Tuesday, April 24th beginning after morning prayers.  We hope you can join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of our students!

Mass is at school on Wednesday, April 25th.  Fifth grade will be hosting the Mass on this day. 

Missoula Theater will be here this week!  Auditions are on Monday beginning at 3:15-5:15 PM.  We hope to see you at the final performance on Saturday, April 28th at 7:00 PM at Fremont Elementary School.  Please see the flier that was sent home last week for more details.

Religion:

The annual ACRE (Assessment of Catechesis Religious Education) test will be administered to all fifth and eighth graders on Tuesday.

Memorize Psalm 22:2, 23-24 by Friday:  My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?  I will proclaim your name to the assembly; you who fear the Lord, give praise!

Our lessons this week will focus on the events of Holy Week including the Triduum.

Math:  

Students will continue to rename improper fractions as mixed numbers and vice versa.  Adding & subtracting fractions with like denominators/answers in simple form will be our new objective this week.

Social Studies: 

This week, students will be introduced to our next chapter in the textbook on the Revolutionary War.  We will preview the text, learn the vocabulary, and make predictions about the content that will be covered. 

Geography:

Wednesday test on the states and capital cities of the United States SW Region.

Science:

Students will continue to observe and write journal entries on behaviors and growth changes seen in the live eagle nest cam from Decorah, Iowa.  They will also complete comprehension questions on Science news from a TFK.

Reading: 

The reading this week will relate to stories about the Revolutionary War.  Students will also practice a small Reader's Theater script at the end of the week. 

Language Arts/Spelling:

There will be no spelling list this week.  

Students will finish writing their mini-research report on a colony.  We will begin typing them into the computer on Monday as well.  

A review of subjects and predicates will take place this week in language.  

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Mass on Wednesday at the church.  Please arrive by 8:15!

Thursday and Friday this week will be half-days with dismissal at 12:30 PM.

We will take our Chapter 7 test on the Middle Colonies this Wednesday.  

Science:


Reading: 

To conclude our study of the colonies, students will read specific information about colonial life with a group and present this information to the class.  Students will also continue reading information about a specific colony to be used in their research report.  

Language Arts/Spelling:

We will study List 22 from our spelling books this week.

Students will finish their research on a colony and begin the process of writing a mini-research report.

Content and Announcements for March 19-23

Religion:

Students will reflect upon the Lenten promises they've completed and look ahead to see if they want to revise or add any promises.  We will complete our study of the Communion of Saints in Ch 11.  The online review is due by Thursday morning, and the Ch 11 test will be finished that day also.

Memorize by Friday:  Psalm 23   The Lord is my Shepherd.  There is nothing I shall want.

Math:  

Students will apply their factoring skills to finding equivalent fractions and simplified fractions.

Social Studies: 

We will finish reading Chapter 7 on the Middle Colonies. The test will be next week.   

Students will start a research project this week on a specific colony to conclude our study of the colonization of America.  This writing assignment is also aligned with our language arts standards.  We will work on this writing assignment in class until spring break.   

Geography: 

Tuesday Test - memorized locations, capital cities, and abbreviations for the nine NE Region states.  Students will create a study guide on the 14 SE Region states for a test next Tuesday, March 27.

Science:

Students will complete comprehension questions for a TFK issue on technology.  The Spring Equinox of March 20 will be observed.  Moon phases that determine the Easter date will be studied.

Reading: 

We are wrapping up our survival theme this week.  Students will be presenting their book summaries beginning Tuesday, March 20th.    

In class, we will discuss how to read nonfiction text to find information to be used in a research report.  Identifying key words and summarizing will be reinforced. 

Language Arts/Spelling:

Latin roots will continue to be taught for spelling this week.  The roots include scrib and spec.  

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

We would like to thank the parent drivers who helped with the field trip last Monday.  We were blessed with great weather and perfect snowshoeing conditions.  Thank you Mrs. Sear, Mr. Martinez, Mrs. Richardson, and Mr. Daulerio for coming with us!

The end of the third quarter will end on Tuesday, March 27th.  Report cards will be sent home the following week.

Religion:

Online review for Ch 10 due by Wednesday -  Ch 10 test on Wednesday!

Memorize by Friday: Romans 5:8   God proves His love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.


Math:  

We will review factors and multiples then identify composite and prime numbers.  Prime Number factor trees will be created. 


Social Studies: 

Geography:  Students will begin to memorize the location, state abbreviation, and capital city of states in the Northest Region.  Test will be next Tuesday, March 20.  We will use a world map to locate leprechauns by following clues.


Science:

After our snow shoe field trip, we will complete a follow up activity.  Our Science news this week covers the topic of technology found in our TFK magazine.

Content and Announcements for March 5-9

Religion:

Memorize by Friday:  John 6:51  Jesus said, "I am the living bread from heaven!  Everyone who eats this bread will live forever."

The importance of the Holy Eucharist in our Catholic lives is our focus this week.  We continue to evaluate, live, and discuss our Lenten promises.


Math:  

Factors and multiples have been introduced and practiced.  Now we move on to exponents and prime numbers.


Social Studies: 

We will continue our study of the Middle Colonies throughout the week.

Geography:

The six regions of the U. S. will be identified and labeled on a map.  Students will sort the fifty states into their regional groups before they begin to memorize each state and capital (by regions) beginning next week.


Science:

In preparation for our snow shoe trek next Monday, we are studying Lake Tahoe geology and animal life including unique adaptation behaviors.


Reading:

On Tuesday, students will be taking a quiz on the third section of the book My Side of the Mountain.

Students will have until next Wednesday, March 14th, to finish their independent books on survival.  Please note that this due date has been extended to allow more time for students to finish reading their books. 

Language Arts/Spelling:

In writing, students will begin research on a specific colony.  This is part of the process of learning how to write research papers.

For spelling, students are going to be involved in word study activities that focus on Latin roots and bases.  We will begin this week with the roots "pend" and "dict."  A list will be sent home for students to study. 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Get your snow shoe trek gear ready!  A second copy of the required supplies was sent home last Thursday.  If the snow conditions and weather permit, we will go to Heavenly Ski Resort next Monday, March 12 for our all day field trip!
